What Attracted You To The Field of Nursing?
I have always enjoyed helping people and a number of family members worked as Nurses when I was growing up. I went to a local high school that offered a medical program and did clinical rotations at a local hospital while still in high school and the rest is history.

I was a candy striper and a lifeguard and my close friends were choosing nursing as a major. Fortunately, nursing was a perfect fit for me.

What Attracted You To The Field of Nursing?
My mother wanted both my sister and I to become nurses. She was taken to the labor camps in Auschwitz when she was 16. Fortunately she was smuggled out and had to find her way through the then countries of Czechoslovakia to find somewhere safe to live. She got on a train to go up to Germany. There were Red Cross doctors and nurses on the train. Shortly after she got on and the train started to take off it stopped and Nazi soldiers came on the train and were headed right for my mother and her traveling companions. The American doctor told them she was one of his nurses. She did not speak English and he did not speak German however they understood each other. After glaring at them both the Nazi's left the train. My mother shared that story and said she wanted us both to be nurses. I was always interested in well-being and curious about why people do what they do. It was a natural fit for me although secretly I always wanted to have my own business. I went to Nursing school and ended up working as a Critical Care Monitor tech (this was 40 years ago!!!) and loved technology and immediately went into ICU where I worked for 10 years before going into Mental Health. I was struck by how nurses and physicans would take care of everyone else at their own expense. I went to graduate school and chose degrees in Psychology as I wanted to understand how to change behavior.

Wow, what wasn't there that attracted me to nursing? I absolutely love this profession and all the opportunities that have been possible. I have a thing for uniforms too, first Catholic School, then the Navy and then being a Nurse. I was out of the clinical setting when scrubs came into vogue.

How I actually got into nursing is a funny story that my mom likes to remind me of all
of the time. My senior year of college I was moving into an apartment with two nursing
majors. One of them even had a nurse professor at our school for a mother! So needless
to say as we were unpacking our stuff and I was standing there telling them I "didn't
know what I wanted to do when I grew up" they all put their heads together, the four of
them (my two roommates to be, my mother, and her mother the nursing professor) and
decided I apply to the accelerated nursing program at my college. So for me, it wasn't so
much a "choice" but I am grateful I listened to their guidance every day of my life!

What Attracted You To The Field of Nursing?
Well in all honesty, I was in my late 20s when I went to nursing school. I had been interested in a variety of medical professions and already had a BS in Biochemistry. A friend of mine's mother, an RN talked with me at length about what she loved about nursing, the practical lure of lots of job opportunities, and my own interest combined led me to applying to an ADN program. I was kind of drifting with teaching high school science and working on hazardous waste field projects and looking for lab jobs that I didn't really want. I got in and from the very first class realized that the nursing profession was way more challenging and exciting than I realized. It is funny that I minored in "Theatre and Communication" with my biochem degree and now have come to this exciting work in Medical Improv. It's all related in sometimes mysterious ways! What Attracted You ToThe Field of Nursing?
I was a Certified Swedish Massage Practitioner and Certified Kripalu Yoga Instructor during my 20’s after leaving behind my studies in several schools of fine art. After some years in the holistic health field, I found that I wanted to be able to impact people’s health from the "inside" of the system rather than just the "outside."
I had three aunts who were nurses---one who was a personal nurse to General Patton during World War II---and their stories of nursing and its importance made an impression on me from a very early age.
I always perceived nursing as a humble and important profession, and joining the ranks of nurses seemed like a perfect "fit" for me vis-à-vis fulfilling my goal of bringing improved health to as many people as possible over the course of my career. The holistic nursing model was a good match with my previous training in holistic health, and my ongoing goal has always been to bring that holism back to the forefront of nursing practice.
