Sun, Jan. 26, 2003: Minnesota: Lawmakers hear educators', nurses' concerns about bills:"The bill that has nurses concerned is HB1245, sponsored by Rep. George Keiser, R-Bismarck. It would remove oversight of nursing education from the Board of Nursing and give it to the Board of Higher Education. The bill also would loosen educational requirements.
A current and a former registered nurse said the bill is dangerous because it reduces the quality of health care in the state. One said health care is becoming ever more complex, and it makes no sense to reduce educational requirements.
Potter, who sits on the Human Services Committee, said supporters of the bill think lowering standards would help recruit nurses to rural areas, which face a shortage of nurses. October 30, 2002: Minnesota: Grant opens doors for health care:"High school students in Wadena County may soon have the chance to complete nurse's aide/homemaker home health certification during high school.
Student advisers met Friday at Tri-County Hospital to hear about a new class that may be available to students in the spring, thanks to the $20,000 grant.
One of the ways Tri-County Hospital, Freshwater Education and Northwest Technical College are addressing the nursing shortage is through health care career exploration. June 21, 2001: Minnesota, Minneapolis: Striking nurses say replacements have it easier:"Striking registered nurses at two Fairview hospitals say their replacements are being treated to the sort of lighter workloads that Fairview has long denied them. Fairview officials, however, say they've made no change in staffing policies since 1,350 nurses went on strike June 3.

The Nurse/Patient Ratio by Genevieve M. Clavreul RN, Ph.D.:"The New Year heralds many things, and this year brings legislation mandating a patient/nurse ratio in California. But after the confetti stops falling, did we get what we want? We now have a panacea for thousands of nurses in California, however, the ratio really can’t be enforced. (At the writing of this article the companion bill for enforcement is stalled in the legislature, having been defeated at least once already).
As my children are fond of saying, “why am I not surprised?” Having been a nurse for almost 30 years, most of those years spent in the NICU/PICU, I am used to working with a strict nurse/patient ratio. ICU’s and a few other areas of nursing have always been under the control of an “acuity” system. Actually, all nursing is supposed to be, but we all know this isn’t always the case. For this reason, I knew in my heart that legislating a nurse/patient ratio was probably an exercise in futility."
