Cheryl Schosky, CRNA, MSN, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, Nurse Entrepreneur, Rexall Showcase International:"After receiving my BSN in 1986 and my MSN in anesthesia in 1992, I began what I thought would be my career until retirement. I worked hard to achieve my personal goals and be the best professional I could be. I was making a six-figure income and believed it would always exist and continue to grow over time. However, over the past 6 years Managed Care has dramatically changed health care for patients and professionals." Florida Nursing Links:

Direct
Patient Care: Constipation, Intestinal, Bowel Obstruction: https://nursefriendly.com/nursing/directpatientcare/gastrointestinal.gi.symptoms/constipation.intestinal.bowel.obstruction.htm
Why Am I Constipated? National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse:"Constipation (con-stuh-PAY-shun) means that a person has three bowel movements or fewer in a week. The stool is hard and dry. Sometimes it is painful to pass. You may feel "draggy" and full.
Some people think they should have a bowel movement every day. That is not really true. There is no "right" number of bowel movements. Each person's body finds its own normal number of bowel movements. It depends on the food you eat, how much you exercise, and other things.
Agenet.com:"Constipation is a symptom, not a disease. It is defined as having fewer bowel movements than usual, with a long or hard passing of stools. Older people are more likely than younger people to have constipation. But experts agree that older people often worry too much about having a bowel movement every day. There is no right number of daily or weekly bowel movements. Regularity may mean bowel movements twice a day for some people or just twice a week for others."
Constipation, American Gastroenterological Association:"Constipation is the infrequent and difficult passage of stool. The frequency of bowel movements among healthy people varies greatly, ranging from three movements a day to three a week. As a rule, if more than three days pass without a bowel movement, the intestinal contents may harden, and a person may have difficulty or even pain during elimination. Stool may harden and be painful to pass, however, even after shorter intervals between bowel movements. Straining during bowel movements or the feeling of incomplete evacuation may also be reported as constipation."
Constipation, American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons:"Constipation is a symptom that has different meanings to different individuals. Most commonly, it refers to infrequent bowel movements, but it may also refer to a decrease in the volume or weight of stool, the need to strain to have a movement, a sense of incomplete evacuation, or the need for enemas, suppositories or laxatives in order to maintain regularity. For most people, it is normal for bowel movements to occur from three times a day to three times a week; other people may go a week or more without experiencing discomfort or harmful effects. Normal bowel habits are affected by diet. The average American diet includes 12 to 15 grams of fiber per day, although 25 to 30 grams of fiber and about 60 to 80 ounces of fluid daily are recommended for proper bowel function. Exercise is also beneficial to proper function of the colon. Eating foods high in fiber, including bran, shredded wheat, whole grain breads and certain fruits and vegetables will help provide the 25 to 30 grams of fiber per day recommended for proper bowel function."
National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse:"Constipation is passage of small amounts of hard, dry bowel movements, usually fewer than three times a week. People who are constipated may find it difficult and painful to have a bowel movement. Other symptoms of constipation include feeling bloated, uncomfortable, and sluggish." Pediatrics, Children:
Are Your Bowels Moving? Kidshealth.org:"Some kids feel too embarrassed to talk about the lower parts of their digestive systems - their intestines (bowels). They may also feel shy about asking questions about their bowel movements. But kids need to know what's normal and what's not."
Constipation in Children, National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse:"When a child does not eat enough fiber, drink enough liquids, or get enough exercise, constipation is more likely to occur. It also happens when children ignore the urge to have a bowel movement, which they often do out of either embarrassment to use a public bathroom, fear or lack of confidence in the absence of a parent, or unwillingness to take a break from play. Sometimes constipation is caused by medicines or a disease." **********************************************************
Dehydration
Dehydration: Introduction & Symptoms, Onhealth:"Dehydration occurs when the amount of water in the body falls below normal, which, in turn, disrupts the balance of sugars and salts (electrolytes) in the body. Many factors can lead to dehydration, including vomiting or diarrhea, bleeding, certain medications and a variety of diseases. Infants, young children and the elderly are particularly sensitive to the effects of dehydration and may become dehydrated rapidly. Left untreated, dehydration can result in shock and then death."
Dehydration, Why it is so dangerous, World Health Organization:"Dehydration is the loss of water and salts from the body. The human body needs water to maintain enough blood and other fluids to function properly. Along with the fluids, the body also needs electrolytes, which are salts normally found in blood, other fluids, and cells."
About Oral Rehydration Therapy:"Each year, about three million children under the age of five die from dehydration. Most of these deaths are preventable through early use of oral rehydration therapy. Oral rehydration therapy is a safe, effective and inexpensive method of preventing dehydration and loss of electrolytes. In the U.S., dehydration is a significant hidden cause of preventable hospitalization and infant deaths." **********************************************************
Conscious Sedation:
Endorsement of Position Statement on the Role of the Registered Nurse (RN) in the Management of Patients Receiving IV Conscious Sedation for Short-Term Therapeutic, Diagnostic, or Surgical Procedures: The American Nursing Association.:"Intravenous conscious sedation is produced by the administration of pharmacologic agents. A patient under conscious sedation has a depressed level of consciousness, but retains the ability to independently and continuously maintain a patent airway and respond appropriately to physical stimulation and/or verbal command."
Administration of Conscious Sedation, Michael Kost, CRNA, MSN:"Nurse anesthetists in ORs are no longer the only nurses administering sedation. Healthcare reform has changed that exclusive practice pattern. Shrinking reimbursement for diagnostic procedures, the elimination of anesthesia payment for clinical services, and limitations on hospital access for minor diagnostic and surgical procedures have boosted the number of conscious sedation procedures performed in the US.1"
American Dental Association: Guidelines For The Use Of Conscious Sedation, Deep Sedation
And General Anesthesia For Dentists"The purpose of these guidelines is to allow dentists to provide their patients with the benefits of anxiety and pain control in a safe and efficacious manner.
These guidelines are not intended to include the use of nitrous oxide/oxygen when used alone and/or with local anesthesia."

The aim of the On-Line Journal of Nursing Informatics (OJNI) is to publish peer-reviewed, original, high quality scientific papers, review articles, practice-based articles, and databases related to nursing informatics." **********************************************************
Speech Disorders ********************************************************** Commonly Used Drugs & Medications:
Lithium Carbonate (Lithium):
Lithium--Detailed Narrative, National Alliance for the Mentally Ill :"Lithium carbonate - a salt - came to be regularly used to control manic depressive illness in this country in the 1960's. Today it is the most commonly used medication to treat bipolar (manic-depressive) illness. There are a variety of different brands of lithium dispensed in tablets, capsule, and liquid form: Lithotabs, Lithane, Lithonate, Eskatlith, Cibalith, and Lithobid. Lithium is helpful in 70 percent to 80 percent of bipolar patients, making it one of the most effective psychiatric medications available."
Lithium Interactions, Drugstore.com:"Some studies have found that people taking lithium long-term who have high blood levels of folic acid respond better to lithium.2 3 Not all studies have confirmed these findings, however." **********************************************************
Amoxicillin:
U.S. Prescribing Information for Amoxil ®, Smith Kline Beecham:
Antibioticos (Italian Journal):"Amoxicillin is a semi-synthetic penicillin. It is an antibacterial agent with a broad spectrum of bactericidal activity against Gram-positive organisms and many Gram-negative pathogens."
Druginfonet: Doctors' Answers to "Frequently Asked Questions" - Amoxicillin:
Infomed Drug Guide, Amoxycillin:"Amoxycillin hinders the cell wall synthesis of sensitive bacteria and is bactericidal. It is active against all penicillin-sensitive bacteria: streptococci and most strains of pneumococci, gonococci, and meningococci are sensitive. Bacteria that produce ß-lactamase (e.g. most of the staphylococci) are resistant. Amoxycillin is also active against strains of haemophilus influenza that do not produce ß-lactamase, against branhamella catarrhalis, and partially against E. coli, Proteus mirabilis and salmonella. In combination with the ß-lactamase inhibitor clavulanic acid it is effective against ß-lactamase producing staphylococci, h. influenza, and bacteroides fragilis."
RXList.com:"Amoxicillin is a semisynthetic antibiotic, an analog of amoxicillin, AMOXIL, POLYMOX, TRIMOX, with a broad spectrum of bactericidal activity against many gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms."
