Mircette, (desogestrel/ethinyl estradiol and ethinyl estradiol), Mircette.com:"Tablets has excellent cycle control as demonstrated by clinical trials. The regimen begins with 21 days of 20 mcg ethinyl estradiol and 150 mcg desogestrel. The last seven days in the cycle start with two days of placebo pills, followed by five days of 10 mcg ethinyl estradiol pills. MIRCETTE reduces the daily estrogen dose from the commonly prescribed 30-35 mcg level, while maintaining excellent cycle control and favorable tolerability."

Mircette, Organon:"The active metabolite of desogestrel, etonogestrel, has a very high binding affinity to progesterone receptors. Stimulation of progesterone receptors in the uterus maintains the endometrium. Clinical benefits: Excellent cycle control. Low incidence of breakthrough bleeding (BTB) and spotting. Patient acceptability and satisfaction."

Mircette, DocGuide:"CHAPEL HILL, NC -- March 13, 2000 -- A clinical study released today by the journal CONTRACEPTION establishes that Mircette(R), containing 20 micrograms (mcg) of ethinyl estradiol (EE), offers the equivalent cycle control to a higher dose pill (Ortho Tri-Cyclen(R), 35 mcg EE) and the low occurrence of side effects associated with new lower dose pills (Alesse(R), 20 mcg EE). The study is the first large, controlled clinical trial to directly compare 20 mcg and 35 mcg pills. Researchers found that common side effects such as bloating, breast tenderness and nausea were approximately 50 percent more common in women using Ortho Tri-Cyclen as compared to Mircette and Alesse. Side effects, particularly in the first few months of pill use, are a significant factor in oral contraceptive (OC) compliance and continuation. While cycle control (bleeding or spotting between periods) was similar in all pills studied after the end of six cycles, Mircette and Ortho Tri-Cyclen users exhibited better cycle control in the first two cycles among starters (first-time birth control pill users)."

Mircette, Integrative Medicine:"What are the common side effects of this medicine? Headache. mild pain medicine may help. Belly pain and cramps. Swelling and bloating. Nausea or vomiting. Small frequent meals, frequent mouth care, sucking hard candy, or chewing gum may help. Breast enlargement or tenderness. Vaginal bleeding (breakthrough bleeding, spotting) may occur."

Mircette, Drugs.com:"Oral contraceptives are known also as the Pill, OCs, BCs, BC tablets, or birth control pills. This medicine usually contains two types of hormones, estrogens (ES-troh-jenz ) and progestins (proh-JES-tins) and, when taken properly, prevents pregnancy. It works by stopping a woman's egg from fully developing each month. The egg can no longer accept a sperm and fertilization is prevented. Although oral contraceptives have other effects that help prevent a pregnancy from occurring, this is the main action. Sometimes a woman's egg can still develop even though the medication is taken once each day, especially when more than 24 hours pass between two doses. In almost all cases when the medicine was taken properly and an egg develops, fertilization can still be stopped by oral contraceptives. This is because oral contraceptives also thicken cervical mucus at the opening of the uterus. This makes it hard for the partner's sperm to reach the egg. In addition, oral contraceptives change the uterus lining just enough so that an egg will not stop in the uterus to develop. All of these effects make it difficult to become pregnant when properly taking an oral contraceptive. No contraceptive method is 100 percent effective. Studies show that fewer than one of each one hundred women correctly using oral contraceptives becomes pregnant during the first year of use . Birth control methods such as having surgery to become sterile or not having sex are more effective. Using condoms, diaphragms, progestin-only oral contraceptives, or spermicides is not as effective as using oral contraceptives containing estrogens and progestins. Discuss with your health care professional your options for birth control."

Mircette, Yahoo Medialink:"MARCH-2000) -- A clinical study released March 13 by the journal Contraception establishes that Mircette®, containing 20 micrograms (mcg) of ethinyl estradiol (EE), offers the equivalent cycle control to a higher dose pill (Ortho Tri-Cyclen®, 35mcg EE) and the low occurrence of side effects associated with new lower dose pills (Alesse®, 20 mcg EE). The study is the first large, controlled clinical trial to directly compare 20 mcg and 35 mcg pills. Researchers found that common side effects such as bloating, breast tenderness and nausea were approximately 50-percent more common in women using Ortho Tri-Cyclen as compared to Mircette and Alesse. Side effects, particularly in the first few months of pill use, are a significant factor in oral contraceptive (OC) compliance and continuation. While cycle control (bleeding or spotting between periods) was similar in all pills studied after the end of six cycles, Mircette and Ortho Tri-Cyclen users exhibited better cycle control in the first two cycles among starters (first-time birth control pill users). Self-reported acne decreased in 43-percent of the Mircette starters and 19-percent of the Alesse starters, while 22-percent of the Ortho Tri-Cyclen starters experienced an increase in acne. There was less change in women changing from another oral contraceptive to one of these three pills (switchers), although Mircette users again demonstrated the greatest decrease in acne (16-percent), while Alesse users experienced no change and Ortho Tri-Cyclen users experienced a 22-percent increase. However, no product-specific differences in decrease of acne achieved statistical significance. The study also indicates that the new low dose pills provide equally good contraceptive protection as the older preparations with higher estrogen levels. No pregnancies occurred among Mircette users, one among Alesse users and three among Ortho Tri-Cyclen users."

Mircette, ProActive Health:"A different kind of birth control should be used during the first 3 weeks of oral contraceptive use to make sure you are protected from pregnancy. Tell your doctor if you have lupus, high blood pressure, epilepsy, asthma, migraine headaches, sugar diabetes, or depressed mood. Women who take birth control pills should not smoke because they increase their risk of having a heart attack, stroke, or blood clot. If you miss two periods in a row, call your doctor for a pregnancy test before you take any more pills. You should see your doctor on a regular basis (every 6 months or 1 year) while taking birth control pills. It is best to wait 2 or 3 months after stopping birth control pills before you try to get pregnant."

Mircette, Floyd Information Network:"I am a 25 yr. old woman. I had been on Ortho-cept for 4 1/2 yrs, and recently was switched to Mircette due to inability to lose weight, excessive moodiness etc. I have been on Mircette for 4 months and despite my healthy lifestyle (workout each night-30 min. cardio, 30 min light weight trainning) I have gained 11 lbs. in less than two months......I AM HORRIFIED! I used to be VERY heavy and lost about 65 lbs., so to someone like me this out of the blue 11 lbs. is a nightmare. I'm getting married in 10 months and need to be in a gown, that has been sized already!!!! I am now blaming my new pill, so I have decided to go off mircette and keep up my exercise and low fat diet to see what happens. What side effects can I expect by going off the pill after almost 5 yrs. now? I am hoping for less of a barrier to weight loss, but I've seen some horror stories on other sites about jitteriness, nausea, nightsweats.....any info would be greatly appreciated. Almost all of the studies done to prove or disprove weight gain, with the pill, have shown no effect for most people. As many loose weight as gain. But there certainly can be individual sensitivities that can account for your weight gain. And if you are sure it is just not anxiety related eating, etc. associated with wedding "stuff" such as extra lunches, showers, etc. then the pill can be your problem. Switching to a different pill is not likely to help. I would recommend going off the pill and considering an IUD for contraception. Congratulations and best wishes for a long life. Today is my anniversary and I strongly recommend married life. Namaste. Dr. JJ"

Mircette, Third Age Inc.:"The Pill With Fewer Side Effects. A lower-dose birth control pill may offer women effective protection against pregnancy with fewer side effects, research suggests. A clinical study in the journal Contraception finds Mircette -- with 20 micrograms of ethinyl estradiol -- gives the same pregnancy protection as the higher dose Ortho Tri-Cyclen, with 35 micrograms of ethinyl estradiol. The clinical study says Mircette also has fewer side effects than the new lower dose Alesse, with 20 micrograms of ethinyl estradiol. Researchers say for the first six months of use, common side effects such as bloating, breast tenderness and nausea were about 50 percent more common in women using Ortho Tri-Cyclen than Mircette and Alesse."

Mircette, Kaisernetwork.org:"Nausea: Fifty-seven percent of participants said that Alesse would be their first choice of oral contraceptives to prescribe to a woman who experienced nausea during previous use of birth control pills. Thirteen percent listed Loestrin and 8% reported "other." When asked what their second choice would be for women in this category, 24% of providers named Loestrin, 21.1% listed Mircette and 15.2% said Alesse (Contraceptive Technology Update, September 2001)."
