Eating Disorders Information. Eating Disorders & Pregnancy. National Eating Disorders Association
"Professionals recommend that women with eating disorders do their best to resolve the eating disorder related weight and behavior problems before they attempt to get pregnant. Pregnancy and motherhood require a great amount of physical and psychological strength. During pregnancy, the growing baby receives all its nourishment from the mother’s body. When stores of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients are low, a woman’s body will drain them to support the growth and development of the baby. If reserves are not sufficiently restored through healthy eating, the mother can become severely malnourished, and this in turn can lead to depression, exhaustion and many other serious health complications". ******************************************************
About Eating Disorders. About Eating Disorders. The Moore Center for Eating Disorders
"Eating disorders are complex and confusing problems which affect an individual's physical, emotional, and intellectual well-being, as well as disrupting relationships with family and significant others. As disorders such as anorexia, bulimia, or compulsive overeating progress, a person becomes increasingly unable to function within his or her system; they become more entrenched in the eating disorder, which can escalate into a life-threatening condition". ******************************************************

"Eating disorders can be treated and a healthy weight restored. The sooner these disorders are diagnosed and treated, the better the outcomes are likely to be. Because of their complexity, eating disorders require a comprehensive treatment plan involving medical care and monitoring, psychosocial interventions, nutritional counseling and, when appropriate, medication management". ******************************************************

Eating Disorders. Are there risk factors for this condition? University Hospitals Health System
"A number of factors predispose some people toward eating disorders. Eating disorders run in families and may have a genetic component. Gender is a risk factor. People with significant body image dissatisfaction, who are perfectionistic, have other psychological problems such as low self-esteem, depression, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder are all thought to be at higher risk for developing an eating disorder. Individuals who participate in highly competitive athletic activities are at greater risk of developing an eating disorder. At particular risk of anorexia nervosa are females in sports such as gymnastics, figure skating and track and males who participate in wrestling". Specific Disorders: Anorexia Nervosa, Mylifepath:"Anorexia nervosa, or simply anorexia, is a psychiatric and physical illness in which the sufferer basically starves herself. Clinically, a person is anorexic if she has 85 percent or less of the normal body weight for someone of her age and height, yet continues to fast or diet. An estimated one percent of teenage girls and women in their twenties have the disease. It's a serious condition that can cause grave health problems if untreated: one in 10 cases of anorexia ends in death. Although the disorder is less common in men (who make up about 5 percent of all cases), they too can develop it." ****************************************************** Binge Eating Disorder, Mylifpath:"It's a behavioral disorder characterized -- as the name suggests -- by episodes of uncontrollable eating. If you have binge eating disorder (BED), you consume unusually large amounts of food at a single sitting -- probably in secret and until you're uncomfortably full. (This eating disorder is similar to bulimia, but people with BED don't try to compensate for their binges by purging the food; that is, they don't try to get rid of it through vomiting or taking laxatives.) You may feel overwhelmed by shame and embarrassment about both your weight (whether you're overweight or not) and your eating patterns. Most people diagnosed with BED are obese (more than 20 percent over a normal weight for their size), but the disorder also appears in people of normal weight." ****************************************************** Bulimia Nervosa, Mylifepath:"Although this eating disorder is less well-known than anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa is actually more common among American teenage and young women -- and just as serious. Bulimia nervosa, or simply "bulimia," is often referred to as "bingeing and purging." In other words, people with this eating disorder go on wild eating binges, consuming between 1,000 and 60,000 calories in one sitting (usually in the form of high-calorie foods such as ice cream or pies). They then purge what they've eaten by vomiting or taking laxatives or diuretics before their bodies can absorb the food. In many cases they follow up binges not by purging but with periods of excessive exercising or fasting." ******************************************************

Treatments for Patients With Eating Disorders, Mylifepath.com:"Eating disorders affect a significant number of Americans, an estimated 5 million every year. These disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorders and several other variants. Although these disorders are more common in adolescent girls or young women, 5 to 15 percent of cases of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa and 40 percent of cases of binge-eating disorders occur in boys or men. In addition, eating disorders may occur in young children and persons over 40 years of age. Becker and colleagues reviewed the various treatment options for patients affected by eating disorders and addressed the evidence for medical and psychiatric therapies. The primary goal of management should include stabilization of the patient's medical and nutritional status." ****************************************************** ****************************************************** For Health Information you can use, Follow, Connect, Like us on (Most Invites Accepted): http://www.nursefriendly.com/social/: Twitter! http://www.nursefriendly.com/twitter Blogger: http://4nursing.blogspot.com Facebook: http://www.nursefriendly.com/facebook Linked In: http://www.linkedin.com/in/nursefriendly Nursing Entrepreneurs, Nurses In Business, http://nursingentrepreneurs.ning.com/ Posterous.com, http://nursefriendly.posterous.com StumbleUpon, http://www.nursefriendly.com/stumbleupon
