Informatics: A Conceptual Overview, U.T. Houston :"The focus of informatics at U.T. Houston is the practical use of information technology to create, classify, store, distribute, discover and utilize digitally encoded information and knowledge to further the educational, research and health care missions of the University.
"Informatics" is a term widely used today in numerous contexts. The Merriam Webster On-Line Dictionary simply defines informatics as being "information science" which in turn is described as "the collection, classification, storage, retrieval, and dissemination of recorded knowledge treated both as a pure and as an applied science". Edward (Ted) Shortliffe, considered by many to be one of the founders of medical informatics, notes that "the emergence of medical informatics as a new discipline is due in large part to advances in computing and communications technology, to an increasing awareness that the knowledge base of medicine is essentially unmanageable by traditional paper-based methods, and to a growing conviction that the process of knowledge retrieval and expert decision making is as important to modern biomedicine as is the fact base on which clinical decisions or research plans are made." ******************************************************
Vanderbilt University Medical Center:"The Informatics Center at Vanderbilt functions
as a highly effective system of people, processes
and technology working at all levels of the medical
center to improve healthcare.
We use information, technology, and communication
to change the face of healthcare to provide the best
care, education and research possible." ****************************************************** ******************************************************

Nurses' Station:"The idea for the Nurses' Station Catalog was conceived in 1989. After searching the marketplace in response to customer inquiries, it became obvious that there were no catalogs of this type serving the nursing profession. To be sure, there were several catalogs offering nurse's uniforms and a smattering of professional items. But there weren't any catalogs at the time offering a range of gifts, clothing, professional items, name badges, shoes and scrubs for nurses. It took two years of hard work to gather samples and put a together a catalog of the most unique and high-quality items for nurses."
