For Setting Rates: Our formula is to take what staff nurses are making, pay my nurses 25% more, and charge facilities 150-200% of that.
So, say a local med/surg nurse in your area is making $20/hr.
I'll pay my nurses 25% more or $25/hr.
And bill a facility $50, or whatever they'll agree to. The usual mark-up is 150 to 200% of what you pay your nurses.
Decide on the lowest amount per hour that your nurses will work for, and that you can sustain a profit on.
Remember if you're paying your nurses as employees, $25/hr turns into $30-35 after you contribute required matching payroll taxes.
Add to that your overhead per month, and you'll get your wholesale price to start from.
Sometimes you need to bid low to get your foot in the door, then gradually raise your rates.
Depending on how you're set up and how many nurses you have, you can substantially outbid your competition and still stay afloat.
When I ran an agency out of my home, I had minimal overhead and lots of cash on hand.
To get my foot into as many facilities as possible, I made my agency the cheapest, while paying my nurses well.
Literally I only made $2-3/hr profit for my first 3000-4000 billable hours. I also had more requests for work than I could handle.
It paid off in the long run. When you become established, you can gradually raise your rates and increase your profits.

Should You Incorporate Your Registry Business? By Joseph Caracci, RN:"The short answer is yes! When starting a new nurse registry business, you are entering into a legal business environment that requires you to take steps to protect your personal assets, such as your home, your savings, and your retirement. With this in mind, you need to determine which legal form you are going to take for your new registry. Some of the common choices are a sole proprietorship, a partnership, a limited liability partnership (LLP), a limited liability company (LLC), and a corporation."
