Gipson, R.N. In what date (month/year) did you start your business? October/2000 What is your experience and background in Nursing? (Medical/Surgical, ER, Psych, OR, etc.): Med/Surg, ER, Nurse Transporter, ACLS, PALS, How did you hear about the Nurse Entrepreneur Homesite?: Thru legal nurse consultant-search sites, network54.com, legal nurse consultant list serves. How many years have you/did you practice as a nurse: 10 years Professional organizations you belong to (are they on the web?): (Specialty organization, ANA, NLN, Union, etc) AALNC What made you decide to start your own business? I wanted to use my nursing skills in a different way that could invite different choices along the nursing pathway to include legal aspects, insurance aspects, and I have always been fairly competent in secretarial and writing skills. How many times have you changed employers in your career? Five or Six times--believe it or not! What specific qualities and traits do you feel make nurses especially qualified to operate a business? Nurses have the ability to organize, coordinate, and prioritize accordingly--regarding life care, and the ability to plan and calculate future needs for patients of long term care, the ability to anticipate and act on knowledge, as well as previous knowledge, to prevent disastrous outcomes, and the ability to handle famously many roles at once--without ever having to stop and think about what comes next! Do you currently practice as a nurse? If yes in what type of setting? I have worked for the last year on and off---more so off--prn, in Emergency and Outpatient-Same day Surgery. If you are a practicing nurse, do you feel short staffing is affecting your ability to provide safe patient care? I have always felt that quality patient care cannot be given adequately--whether you have one month or ten years experience in nursing..that is why I chose to do Emergency Nursing..even so, it is extremely hard to juggle several patients at once, depending on the severity or acuity of patient needs. Nurses should be paid alot more, and given the respect they deserve. When they are offering to take care of patients, they may "pay" for it for the rest of their lives--and their family as well. No matter how controlled the situation seems to be, sometimes disasters can not be anticipated. If they pay professional sports the extreme money they do, then why not spend more on the care of patients and the risks their health care workers take in doing it. You can have all the universal precautions needed to comply with OSHA, but sometimes outcomes are unexpected. Your most pressing concerns with the profession and healthcare (Please note, a response to this question is mandatory for a free listing): I think I have already stated that in the above senario...Health care costs have gotten out of control and it seems better to brush it under a rug that to try and fix what has been so enormously messed up. Most people cannot afford health care, and alot of people abuse what is given to them. Certain guidelines and requirements need to be enforced and ignorance no longer should be the excuse. Other areas of interest and expertise: I have always been interested in the legal aspects and wondered during my nursing education, how the two could be meshed. My father was a policeman, and I have always been interested in both. I also have been interested in the computer...and only recently began to use the internet...about 8 months ago. Of course, my children taught me! ******************************************************
