a repertoire of skills and knowledge necessary
to respond effectively to today's dynamic
health care environment. They also equip

University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing
(BSN, MSN, PhD):"The University of Pittsburgh prepares nurses
at a variety of levels. We have both a traditional
program, which admits persons with a high
school degree, as well a program for registered
nurses who have received their entry-level
education in community colleges or hospital
programs. We are working on the design of
a second-degree program for individuals who
have already received a baccalaureate degree
in another field. Our master of science programs
are designed to prepare expert practitioners,
either as nurse practitioners, nurse clinicians,
or nurse anesthetists, as well as - to - prepare
individuals as expert practitioners in either
nursing education, nursing administration,
informatics, or research management. Our
PhD program is also well respected. It prepares
nurses for academic positions, as well as
for positions as clinical investigators and/or
leaders in the profession." Category: Nursing Schools, Colleges of Nursing, http://www.4nursingschools.com ****************************************************

University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Shadyside / School of Nursing (BSN,
MSN, PhD):"Our undergraduate program combines the latest
in clinical theory with traditional nursing
values that emphasize holistic patient care.
The distinct advantage of a four-year program
is that it gives students the opportunity
to combine a strong theoretical base of biological
and behavioral sciences with a foundation
in the liberal arts. RN to BSN and RN to
MSN options provide a quality, affordable
way for registered nurses to earn their degrees.
Courses are individually tailored to meet
the specific needs of RNs and are consistent
with adult learning principles. Each course
focuses on specific knowledge and skills
needed in the workplace to keep pace with
rapid changes in health care." Category: Nursing Schools, Colleges of Nursing, http://www.4nursingschools.com ****************************************************

University of San Diego / Hahn School of
Nursing:"September, 1973, the late Philip Y. Hahn
committed an endowment of $1 million for
the establishment of a School of Nursing.
It was the overwhelming consensus of professionals
in the field that this new school should
provide a professional education for Registered
Nurses in San Diego leading to a Bachelor
of Science in Nursing. The first class of
students graduated in May, 1976 at the same
time the School received its full eight year
accreditation from the National League for
Nursing. In reponse to the community, the
School developed a Master's program in nursing,
graduating its first class in May, 1979.
Following numerous requests for doctoral
education, a feasiblity study was undertaken
in 1984 and a Doctor of Nursing Science program
was approved by the Board of Trustees. The
first doctoral student graduated in June,
1989. In December of 1998, the Board of Trustees
approved the Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing.
Students were admitted to the new PhD program
beginning in Fall 1999. The two most recent
curricular innovations are the post-master's
Family Nurse Practitioner Certificate Program
in Urgent/Emergent Care offered jointly by
the School and the Scripps Mercy Emergency
Physicians Group and the establishment of
the Masters Entry in Nursing Program (MEPN).
This is the School's first program for non-RN
students and is designed for the second career
student who has a minimum of a bachelor's
degree in another field. The initial MEPN
class began in June 2002." ****************************************************
