What's New
Welcome,

We've created this page to list organizations that could use your help as a volunteer. Whether you're a Nurse, Physician, Mailcarrier, student or average every day consumer, they can use your help.

Healthcare facilities that are usually in dire need of volunteers include your local hospitals, adult daycare centers and nursing homes. Thank you for caring enough to share a few hours of your day with people that need it.

Andrew Lopez, RN

Nursing Students, Helping Where It Counts, American Red Cross:"For more than fifty years, nursing students have been involved in helping the Red Cross deliver critical community services. Volunteering with the American Red Cross is relevant to learning nursing skills and can lead to a lifelong opportunity for service. Follow in the footsteps of some of the most famous nursing leaders. Volunteer today. The American Red Cross partners with nursing faculty to help students develop basic leadership skills, provide meaningful services and help prepare for, prevent and respond to emergencies. Some of the opportunities for nursing student involvement are listed below; opportunities for student nurse involvement are also described in Helping Where It Counts and Make a Difference: Guidelines for Nursing Student Involvement in the American Red Cross."

International Organizations:

Blessed Gérard's Care Centre and Hospice:"The Brotherhood of Blessed Gérard is not a catholic organisation in name alone, but a community of the church, which executes its charitable service as a work of faith. Our work is essentially a fulfilment of the missionary task of the church, to proclaim the gospel in word and deed. The centre of our daily schedule is the celebration of Holy Mass as expression and execution of the redemptory service of the church. If somebody would be critical of or distant from the church and its missionary work, he or she would not feel comfortable in our community. If you can identify with our principles, you will find ample opportunities to have many wonderful experiences."

Médecins Sans Frontières (also known as Doctors Without Borders or MSF):"Médecins Sans Frontières (also known as Doctors Without Borders or MSF) delivers emergency aid to victims of armed conflict, epidemics, and natural and man-made disasters, and to others who lack health care due to social or geographical isolation. MSF was founded in 1971 by a small group of French doctors who believed that all people have the right to medical care regardless of race, religion, creed or political affiliation, and that the needs of these people supersede respect for national borders. It was the first non-governmental organization to both provide emergency medical assistance and publicly bear witness to the plight of the populations they served."

MEDICO, Inc:"Since its founding in 1990, MEDICO has provided basic services to people in need. Founders Lynda and Norm Peters, Jim Durham, and Marian and David Flowers experienced the joy of serving others and wanted to continue giving to those less fortunate. They created MEDICO, an independent organization not tied to a religious or government organization. Through the efforts of MEDICO, an expectant mother receives prenatal care, a little girl can walk normally after club foot surgery, a child obtains books and paper for classes. Since 1990, volunteers from all over the world have helped make this a reality for the people of Latin America."

Thursday, February 24, 2005: Nurse Weingarten offers HOPE to tsunami victims:"The volunteers on the USNS Mercy sleep in triple-bunk beds; most have not set foot on land since arriving in Indonesia. They live and work on a hospital ship off the coast of Banda Aceh, providing medical care to tsunami victims there. Robin Weingarten of Somerville has worked in the USNS Mercy's Intensive Care Unit since Feb. 1. She decided to volunteer when Massachusetts General Hospital, where she works as a nurse, sent out an e-mail informing employees about Project HOPE, a health organization recruiting medical workers. "I've never been this far away from home before," she said. "You know, going half a world away to work on a naval ship, it was definitely different."
